School Readiness OT Checklist: Toileting, Getting Dressed and Classroom Skills

Starting school is a big step, not just for children, but for families too. Many parents tell us they are not worried about letters or numbers. What worries them is whether their child can manage the everyday parts of school without feeling overwhelmed.

Things like using the toilet, getting dressed for sport, or keeping up with classroom routines play a big role in how confident a child feels at school.

This is where occupational therapy supports school readiness.

What does school readiness actually mean?

School readiness is about independence and participation. It is about whether a child can manage their body, their belongings and their emotions in a busy school environment.

At Therabees, we often see children who are capable and curious, but who struggle with the practical demands of school.

Toileting skills at school

Toileting is one of the most common concerns families raise.

Some children avoid using the school toilet all day. Others rush and have accidents. In most cases, this is not a behaviour issue.

Children may struggle with:

  • Managing buttons, zips or fasteners
  • Feeling anxious in busy or noisy bathrooms
  • Knowing how to wipe and manage hygiene
  • Recognising when they need to go

With the right support, these skills can improve and school days become much easier.

Getting dressed and self care skills

Getting dressed for sport or changing shoes can be stressful for some children.

We often see challenges related to:

  • Balance and core strength
  • Coordinating both sides of the body
  • Remembering the order of steps
  • Needing extra time to complete tasks

When dressing is hard, children may avoid activities or feel embarrassed. Occupational therapy helps build the skills needed for independence and confidence.

Classroom skills that support learning

School readiness also includes being able to cope in the classroom.

This can include:

  • Sitting on the floor or at a desk
  • Following simple instructions
  • Managing noise and movement
  • Transitioning between activities
  • Staying calm and regulated enough to learn

Many children who struggle in the classroom are not behind academically. They simply need support with regulation, attention or sensory processing.

Why early support matters

When children struggle with everyday school tasks, it can affect their confidence and enjoyment of school.

Early occupational therapy support can help children:

  • Build independence
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Participate more comfortably at school
  • Develop positive school experiences

No child needs to do everything perfectly. They just need support where it matters.
